COLLEGE : PURPOSE AND PARTICIPATION

                                       COLLEGE CURRICULUM
by William Henry Cash, Jr. 1949
                                                1927 - 2012

The College Curriculum includes all those courses and activities that lead and guide us in the accomplishment of our educational goal.    The curriculum is divided into two groups:
the formal, which includes all regular college courses; and the informal, or extra-curricular activities that we participate in, outside of our regular course of study.
We also divide our formal curriculum into two groups, the required courses and elective courses.  Most schools require courses in English, foreign language, physical education, natural science, and social science.    There are other courses that are pre-requisites for courses of further study.    For example, one must have a course in General Psychology before he can take Applied Psychology.    A student must major in some specified field of study and it is necessary that he be required to take courses that will help him in this field.   Most colleges also ask that their students minor in another field of study.   In addition to the required courses, students are usually given the opportunity to elect certain courses.
Elective courses do have many advantages, it increases our appreciation and knowledge in certain fields; it broadens our interest, and opens up entirely new fields.
The college curriculum should include courses that will help the student personally, and also help him in his service to others.   Courses should be required that will give a broad education in all fields, and specified training in his major field.
Of course my personal opinion is that every student should have a broad knowledge of the Bible, and I think that it would be wise in that if all students were required to take courses in the Bible.   I am well pleased with the courses that are in our school catalog, and my prayer is that someday our school will grow large enough to offer all of them.
