THE IDEAL MINISTER'S WIFE
(CHRISTIAN WORKER'S WIFE)

Considering the vitally essential characteristics of a minister's wife, let us first quote a verse of scripture from II Corinthians
6.4 "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion has light with darkness? From this scripture we may conclude that the first and most important characteristic of a Minister's wife is that she should be a Christian. I have always made the statement that if I were ever to marry, I should like for my wife to be at least as good a Christian as I, if not better.
The second characteristic is that she should be consecrated.
She should be willing to follow directly in the footsteps of Jesus. With her husband, she should be willing to endure hardship and self-denial. In Luke 9.23, Jesus said, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." She would have to be willing to give up the pleasures of the world for the cause of Christ. She would have to forget about the riches of the world, and consecrate her life on the spiritual riches of God.
The third characteristic is that she should be willing to work with her husband. It is very difficult for a man of God to carry on the work of the Lord if his wife doesn't cooperate with him. The ideal minister's wife should be one who is willing to hold her husband up; suffer his griefs and sorrows with him; follow him wherever the Lord may lead him, and pray for him continually. She should be a help-mate and willing to assist her husband in his work.
Another characteristic, is that she should have some training in the field of Christian Education. She should have a good knowledge of the Word of God, and preferably some training in music, education, church work, etc. It would be a great asset to her husband if she had a college education. She should be qualified to take over any church office, or any type of church work.
One of the most important characteristics of a minister's wife is love. She should have the love of God in her heart. She should have a great love for lost souls and should have the desire to win them to Christ. She should have a love for the church; for all it stands for, and seeks to do.
Another characteristic that a minister's wife should have, is the ability to meet people. I think that she should be especially able to lead children. If she has any children of her own, she should be able to train them according to the Word of God. The greatest Christian educational institution in the world is the HOME. She should be able to set the example before the other members, and lead them in the correct functions of a home.
There are many other characteristics that we could name, but this is just to give you a glimpse of some of the essential characteristics of an ideal wife. If it is God's will, for me to marry, I pray that God will give me a wife to meet these characteristics.
Written in 1949, in Henry's freshman year at
Linda Vista Baptist Bible College and Seminary,
[Now known as the El Cajon branch of the So.
California Bible College and Seminary] I was
just starting my freshman year in High School.
Henry asked his professor at the end of this paper,
"Do you know of any prospects?"
The professor wrote on the paper - "Sorry, but
I don't. Proverbs 31.10 But keep looking.
He was 32, going on 33 when he married me, and
I was 26, going on 27. Our marriage lasted from
1960 to 2012 when he went to be with the Lord.
